Bedford Bicycle Advisory Committee
(approved 2007 Aug 08)
May 9, 2007, 7:30pm, Town Hall, Bedford, MA
Present: Ralph Hammond, Bob Sawyer, Joel Parks, Ray Ruetenik, Don Blake, Marcia Bushnell, Amy Mason.
Continuing:
-
Bob submitted a copy of a brochure developed by Marcia Bushnell for the MM Extension. The committee members were impressed by the information conveyed by the brochure pts presentation. She was strongly encouraged to complete brochure. Marcia noted the difficulty reading the map shown and recommended replacing it. Bob also distributed copies of the BFRT Spring Edition of its newsletter.
-
The next meeting of the BFRT committee will be in Westford. That portion of the trail may not be as significant for Bedford, but attendance there could encourage "networking."
-
Concern has been raised about destruction of trees along the MM Extension if it were paved. The Rotary cleared it out several years. Ralph has walked the full 5 miles of the trail a number of times recently and found only four trees of any significance to be removed in the Bedford portion. He is a member of the Bedford BARC committee so he can allay that concern. It was requested that photos be taken of significant places along the trail, particularly at access points, for use in presentations this fall.
-
Ralph noted the increase in traffic on the roads expected by the MAPC in the next two decades and the attendant increase in bike traffic expected. The concern about the Blanding Turtle in Concord, Ralph noted, is actually an insignificant problem. Routes to the MM were discussed. These include Cesar Jones rd, Evans Av, , Mongo Brook, Washington St.
-
Ray reported a recent discussion with Charley Schwerin about the inclusion of the word "commuter" in selling the Minuteman Bikeway but the absence of its use more recently, which he said was in large part due to the lack of bike paths along Hartwell Road. Bob noted that Lexington now plans to provide paths for both entering and leaving the base. This is expected to make a major contribution to commuter biking in the area.
-
A particular candidate for the open seat on the committee was discussed who has joined the town Trails Committee.
-
Ray reported hearing that Lexington has voted $1-3/4 million to pave and install root barriers over 2-1/2 miles of the MM Bikeway there. It is planned to vote an equal amount next year for the remaining half of the 5-miles. Arlington has done similar work on its part of the MM. It shows the value put on the MM by those two towns.
New:
-
Joel read a thoughtful letter about the Bikeway Extension from Janet Powers on behalf of herself, not the Planning Board - will copy and send to members
Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway
Continuing:
-
Police Bike Safety Day -
Amy will send an email through the PMCKids distribution list. Ralph has asked for a mechanic from The Bikeway Source. Bob will be away on the 9th (rain date).
-
Bedford PMC Kids 6/16 9am-1pm at Middle School -
Amy says: table should have brochures, some attraction for kids: guessing game (how many jellybeans?). It would be nice if we had some "logo-wear." Ralph suggests screened reflective ankle bands (source?). Bring left-over handouts from Bike Safety Clinic.
At the moment we do not have anyone available to staff a table at PMC Kids Ride
Meeting adjourned 9pm.
